Performance Protocol for Training

Athletes using SPORTQUEST products have successfully competed in the Olympics and other world class events. Its very important during long training or particularly during Half-Ironman, and IM distance, or any long distance event or competition to maintain both intra-cellular and extra-cellular hydration. This is only possible if you maintain a hypotonic solution during extended activity. Over the years we have observed that in ultra distance races, most athletes face dehydration, followed by cramps, heat fatigue, lack of energy, etc., before the finish. This, we believe, is mainly due to the accumulation of a hypertonic solution in the guts. A hypertonic solution is created by simple high fructose corn syrup, sucrose (dehydrated cane sugar), etc. in sports drinks out there. These drinks may be okay for activities of shorter durations, but definitely not okay for events which are longer than four hours.

WATER, calories (fuel) and electrolytes (primarily sodium) are extremely important for endurance events. Drink the amount of water you normally drink during training. If you are used to drinking 20 oz. per hour, then drink 20 oz. per hour. If you normally drink 32 oz. per hour then drink the same amount. Of course, you have to compensate for current weather conditions, if it is hotter, and you are sweating you need more water. If it is cooler you need a bit less. If you are eating a Power Bar or some solid food, such as CLIF Blocs, etc., then you need more water (at least an additional 10 oz.) to compensate for the bar or solid food. Just drink the required amount of water per hour, calculate it during training.

Getting the required amount of CALORIES PER HOUR is extremely important. Each hour, on an average an athlete expends at least around 5 calories per pound of body weight; swimming, running, or biking. But it is impossible to ingest that amount. It is rather difficult to handle/digest more than 2.0 calories per pound of body weight, that too continuously, hour after hour, for several hours. With practice one can may be go up to 2 calories per lb., of bodyweight per hour. Which means that it becomes difficult for a 150 lb athlete to handle more than 300 calories per hour. Around 300 calories per hour should be easy to handle. Now it is extremely important that these calories come from an easily digestible source such as complex carbs. Solid foods are not only difficult to digest and be absorbed, but also demand that extra amount of precious moisture. Appropriate amount of CARBO-PRO (One heaping scoop = One ounce = 112 calories) mixed in the required amount of water is a perfect source of calories, it is easy to carry, and easy to digest and assimilate.

CARBO-PRO is neutral – has no flavor. Therefore, for flavor, if you are mixing CARBO-PRO in any other sports drink – calculate the total calories you are getting from the mix. The total should be around 300 calories per hour, if you can handle more than this during training then do so – if not be very careful – what you are getting from the other sports drink could be too sweet – too much simple sugar – and more calories than you can handle for 14 hours, continuously – also you have to look at the amount of sodium you are getting from the other drink; is it enough or is it too much. Please look into it.

OR you may use CarboPro 1200, in orange or berry flavor, which is a balanced solution of four different forms of easily digestible and highly absorbable carbohydrates. Which means CarboPro 1200 contains four different kinds of substrates (a substrate is a substance acted upon by a digestive enzyme). Its well known that a solution with more substrates stimulates the activation of more transport mechanisms in the intestinal lumen, than solutions with less substrates. Therefore, in the process more carbohydrates are transported out of the small intestine (absorbed into the blood). This process in turn enhances a greater absorption rate of water (optimized hydration) into the blood stream (through osmosis). Thus, the higher activation rate of transport mechanisms by the four different types of carbs in CarboPro 1200, in addition to the increased function of osmosis, facilitates faster energy release and increased hydration: great for performance.

You need at least 300 calories per hour of training or racing, if you weigh 150 to 160 lbs. This means you have FOUR hours worth of pure calories in a bottle of CarboPro 1200. Good for a Century Ride, or a long training run. During the Race – each bottle will last for at least FOUR hours, on the BIKE or the MARATHON. You can use as much as you need for a training session and refrigerate the remaining for the next session. You may even dilute it by adding it in water and using it as required. CarboPro 1200 is concentrated, therefore drink the amount of water you normally drink per hour of exercise activity.

Electrolyte replacement, particularly Sodium replacement is a must during long training or racing. Therefore the sodium in most sports drinks. You see sweat contains between 2.25 to 3.5 grams of salt per liter, and the rate of perspiration under hot conditions can easily average 1 liter per hour. So for example, during a 5 hour race one could possibly lose approximately 11 to 17.5 grams of salt. So replacing water without the appropriate amount of salt can result in sodium imbalance, causing cramps, heat fatigue and in worst cases can lead to hyponatremia.

Unfortunately almost all leading sports drinks also contain the harmful simple sugars which are used to disguise the salty taste. For instance a leading sports drink contains 140 mg of sodium per 8 fl. oz. serving. Say you need 600 mg of sodium per hour, then you have to consume 44 fl. oz. of that product which will also provide 76 oz. of sugar, which as we have seen will definitely cause the build-up of a hypertonic solution in the guts.

Therefore the need to manage sodium intake. Optimum intake of sodium can vary from 300 mg per hour to 1 gram per hour, or even more in some cases, based on sweat production and sweat sodium concentration. This amount of Sodium and Potassium is good enough for training or racing in normal conditions. However, its hot and you are sweating a lot then you need to consume the required amount of THERMOLYTE to offset the sodium imbalance which may occur.

But first let us figure out your daily carbs and protein requirement.

Your PER HOUR Complex Carbohydrate requirement from CARBO-PRO:
Complex Carbs and calories per hour:
As you already know complex carbs are the most efficient source of fuel. The calories for training and racing should come mainly from complex carbs. For IM distance training regimen you need at least 1.67 calories per hour per pound of bodyweight; (150 lb) approximately at least about 300 calories per hour of training or racing. At least THREE heaping scoops of CARBO-PRO per hour of training and racing. Its easy on the guts and its regular use also helps in maintaining muscle glycogen levels, to about 450 grams which is a good average for an athlete of your weight and training regimen.

Your PROTEIN REQUIREMENT:
For your training regimen, and bodyweight 150 lb = 68 kgs) on an average you need approximately 1.25 to 1.5 grams of Protein per kilo of body weight, per day of training. At least about 85 to100 grams of protein per day. You should get this amount of Protein in several sittings, at the rate 35 grams per sitting. It’s a more effective way of handling protein consumption and maintaining nitrogen balance. Use INTERPHASE Recovery Matrix to get at least 35 grams of high quality protein, at least once a day.

TRAINING PROTOCOL

CARBO-PRO: for immediate and sustained energy

Complex carbohydrate - PERFECT FUEL - replenishes muscle glycogen. Use before, during, and after training for energy, endurance and recovery. Also perfect for Carbo-loading.

One heaping Scoop (One ounce or 28 grams) of CARBO-PRO provides 112 calories – also prevents the use of body protein (muscle) as fuel. For your training regimen you need approximately, at least 300 calories per hour of training / racing. About TWO to THREE heaping scoops of CARBO-PRO mixed in cold fluid (water, juice, milk, etc.), per hour.

DURING TRAINING - USE ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TWO METHODS:

1. BEFORE AND AFTER WORKOUT METHOD: Calculate the number of SCOOPS you need per day (based on total hours of training). TAKE ONE-HALF OF TOTAL DOSAGE BEFORE ACTIVITY AND THE REMAINING ONE-HALF DOSAGE AFTER ACTIVITY.

CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTION: You may mix up to TWO to THREE scoops (2 oz. to 3 oz.) of CARBO-PRO in 12 – 16 oz. of cold fluid (water, juice, milk, etc.) and drink before and after a training session to maintain optimal muscle glycogen levels.

2. DURING WORKOUT METHOD: Based on your calculations – you may mix ONE SCOOP in 10-12 oz of fluid (around 10% solution) in several bottles. You may have to carry several bottles.

CONCENTRATED FORM: Or, based on your calculations, you mix a concentrated solution up to TEN (10) scoops, 10 oz. of CARBO-PRO in TWENTY (20) oz. of water and sip the required amount of scoops to get the required calories per hour. Of course you will have to carry enough water or obtain enough water on the way to get your required amount of water per hour – which is at least 20 oz. per hour – may be more depending on your physiology and the current weather conditions.

After the exercise activity mix the remaining portion or required amount of CARBO-PRO in 10 –12 oz. of water or juice and drink it within the first hour of completing the training session to enable quick recovery.

REMEMBER! COLDER THE SOLUTION – QUICKER THE ABSORPTION!

CARBO-LOADING: Carbs are also a great source of water. Therefore to maintain hydration - load carbs in the four days before competition. After digestion, carbs are converted to glycogen, and stored in your muscles and liver for use as fuel. But in order to store each gram of glycogen, the body also has to store 2.7 grams of water. Great for endurance athletes. Carbo-loading can double your glycogen store. In a 150 lb athlete, total stored glycogen increases from about 400 grams to about 800 grams. The extra glycogen pulls in 400 x 2.7 grams of extra water (36 oz), more than two pints. Then the metabolism of glycogen during activity forms another 0.6 grams of water per gram of glycogen used for energy. So using the extra 400 grams you have loaded, yields a further 10 oz of water. That yields a total of 46 oz of extra water, making carbo-loading as important to fluid status as it is to glycogen status. Start carbo-loading in the four days before competition: Each day use Two scoops (2 oz) in 12-16 oz. of water in the morning and two scoops in the evening. PRACTICE THIS DURING TRAINING FOR EXPERIENCE!

DURING THE RACE: Try the FREY-HUDDLE Method -
Roch Frey and Paul Huddle of Multi-Sports School of Champions have come up with a great method to address the problem of calories as well as maintain hydration. Mix the calculated amount of CARBO-PRO (@250 calories per hour) in water in a bottle or two to make a thick gel - powerful FUEL. Remember this is only FUEL, you have to drink enough water after each gulp of the GEL to keep hydrated. Therefore drink enough water after each gulp of the mix. DRINK AT LEAST 10 OZ OF WATER FOR EACH OZ OF CARBO-PRO IN THE MIX.

Under normal weather conditions, the amount of Sodium (150 mg) and Potassium (100 mg), in each serving, may prove to be sufficient. However, if it is hot and you will be sweating profusely, then it would be better to consume the required amount of THERMOLYTE capsules, per hour.
